Haven’t you ever found yourself remarking, “Wow! This guy is awesome!” when seeing or thinking of your favourite performer, athlete, or a professional from some other stream? Experts are not people with natural abilities or talents in a particular domain but ordinary individuals who attain and maintain a high level of consistency in terms of practice. So, as the old adage goes, “Practice makes perfect!”
Pablo de Sarasate, the renowned Spanish violinist and composer of the Romantic period, was once called a genius by a famous critic. “Genius!?” he retorted sharply. “For thirty-seven years I’ve practised fourteen hours a day, and now they call me a genius!”
Think about how you became good at something – be it some sport, dancing, writing, talking or whatever else you’re currently proficient in – at which you were once a novice or thought it impossible.
There is no substitute for practice, the only ‘magic formula’ that is capable of giving you the results you’re after. Practice empowers and enables you to cross boundaries, the ones you swore you’d never be able to! Inspiration may be sometimes fleeting but practice entails perspiration you can never withhold or do without. You can plan and commit to it so long as you believe in its power and its rewards.
Practice is the beginning of beautiful miracles waiting to happen. Therefore, whatever your goals, your desirable skills, your artistic aspirations and dreams of creativity, work towards building a steady and unshakable practice schedule around it. Having inserted yourself into that schedule, you will find yourself willing to entertain no compromise in exchange for your path to success and greatness!
