Joe Mannath in ‘A Closer Look’ writes about the extraordinary power and courage of forgiveness of an exemplary woman, who underwent untold atrocities in the Nazi camp.
A Jewish woman interned in the Nazi camp during the Second World War suffered great torments and witnessed inhuman cruelty. Once she saw the female Nazi guards waiting for a woman in the camp to give birth to snatch the child and drown it under a cold-water tap. She survived the camp and settled down in Germany.
One day, she and her camp inmates saw one of their cruel Nazi guards walking down the street with her child in a pram. The women flamed and enraged by the bitterness of their camp experience rushed to the pram. This extraordinary woman stopped them from hurting the child. A passer-by observing all the commotion asked the woman with full admiration, “How did you manage to preserve so much love in the midst of so much hatred?” “It is not that I have preserved love; the fact is that love has preserved me,” replied the heroic lady.
