THE OBEROI UDAIVILAS, UDAIPUR
If asked who the father figure of the Indian hotel industry is, the answer is obvious M S Oberoi. As a young man, he dreamed of starting a five star hotel that would be counted among the best in the world. But it was a dream far removed from reality because he had only just a few coins in his pocket.

As the immediate question before him was that of survival, he decided to find a job. When he saw the Sezil Hotel just in front of him he got in to meet the General Manager. Oberoi directly went to the Manager's cabin and told him that he was interested in working at the hotel. But he knew only typing and shorthand. Unfortunately there was no vacancy for that post in the office. But he was not ready to give up. He said, "I'll do anything you tell me. I can go to the market to buy groceries. I can…" After a thought, Oberoi was given job in the hotel.

His presence changed the hotel within a few days. He succeeded in cutting down the expenses. He made the service better. And soon he was given a promotion. Later he was appointed the Assistant General Manger of the Carlton Hotel in Shimla.

Earnest Clark was the owner of this hotel. When Clark left for England, Oberoi became the manager as well as the business partner of Clark. Soon he became the sole owner of Carlton Hotel and later he became the owner of a chain of hotels in India and abroad all through his own sheer efforts.
