Sarah Bernhardt was perhaps the most acclaimed actress of the 19th century. She was known for her charismatic, sensual and highly melodramatic performances in classical plays.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />Sarah was the illegitimate daughter of a Dutch courtesan (the identity of her father is uncertain). As with many illegitimate girls she was raised in boarding schools and convents. When she was 16, she entered a government-sponsored school of acting. She was not considered a particularly promising student at all. However she proved what she could become — a notable actress of the time.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />Sarah was crippled by a knee injury in 1905. The injury continued to trouble her and in 1915 her leg was amputated. She continued to perform from a chair until her death from kidney failure in 1923. That was the spirit of this daring woman for whom acting was her first love. Her heroic effort was greatly appreciated by her fans.</div>

<br />Known as the Divine Sarah, Bernhardt was much more than a stage personality. She was also a painter, sculptor and writer, as well as a savvy businesswoman who ran her own theatres and produced her own plays.</div>

<br />Wouldn’t it be easier to just bury him in the black suit that he’s already wearing the funeral director asked. But the woman insisted that it must be a blue suit, and gave the funeral director a blank cheque to buy one.</div>

<br />When she returned for the wake, she saw her husband in the coffin wearing a beautiful blue suit. She complimented the funeral director on his choice of outfit, and asked how much it cost. He said, “Actually, it didn’t cost anything. As soon as you left, another corpse was brought in and he was wearing a blue suit. I noticed that they were about the same size, so I asked the other widow if she would mind if her husband were buried in a black suit. She said that was fine with her. So I switched the heads.”</div>

<br />Besides supreme insensitivity, this funeral director shows us how shortcuts are in bad taste. To do our jobs properly, we must do them completely. We must learn to take pride in a job well done. If we stick to shortcuts we can never progress.</div>

<br />What’s the problem with cutting corners? Take a piece of paper. Look at its four corners. Now cut one corner and notice what happens. You’ve cut away a corner but you also wind up with an extra corner to deal with. The more corners you cut, the more work piles up. Taking shortcuts and cutting corners is not good for your character, either. You become impatient to reach the top, and are arrogant beyond reproof. This greedy rush towards success can only result in an eventual crash and burn. </div>

A farmer came into town and asked the owner of a restaurant if he could use a million frog legs. The restaurant owner was shocked and asked the man where he could get so many frog legs! The farmer replied, “There is a pond near my house that is full of frogs – millions of them. They all croak all night long and they are about to make me crazy!”</div>

<br />So the restaurant owner and the farmer made an agreement that the farmer would deliver frogs to the restaurant, five hundred at a time for the next several weeks.</div>

<br />The first week, the farmer returned to the restaurant looking rather sheepish, with two scrawny little frogs. The restaurant owner said, “Well, where are all the frogs?”</div>

<br />The farmer said, “I was mistaken. There were only these two frogs in the pond. But they sure were making a lot of noise!”</div>

<br />Next time you hear somebody criticizing or making fun of you, remember, it’s probably just a couple of noisy frogs. Also remember that problems always seem bigger in the dark.</div>

Life is a big uncertainty. Life’s ambiguity has always kept us in the dark. Groping and guessing is our fate. But to know what you will become will not make life any easier. It won’t make any difference at all. What matters is what you do in the present. The knowledge of seeing your own future doesn’t guarantee its fulfillment unless you do something about it.</div>

<br />Imagine this, suppose you are certain that you will be a successful doctor someday. Will you just sit around and wait for it to happen? It doesn’t work that way. Your decisions, your choices and the process that you’ll work to attain it will still stand. And since you are certain that you will become a successful doctor, there will be constant pressure and anxiety and unbearable conscious effort to become one. And the more it will be harder to be one.</div>

<br />Trudging in the depths of life, to an unknown future is not a big deterrent to one’s success. It’s what makes life an adventure. It’s what keeps us on track. It provides us the big challenge. It is what inspires us to do greater work.</div>

There is always a beginning for anything and everything that you plan to do. A good start of anything that you decide to do or make is very important for the successful completion of the same. “Well begun is half done! An error at the beginning, even though quite small, bears the same ratio to the errors in the other parts,” said Aristotle, one of the greatest philosophers of all time.</div>

<br />A good beginning gives you confidence and thus an edge, keeping you on track, whereas a bad start will impede progress, causing much discouragement and apathy. In addition, you risk wasting a lot of time, energy and money. Thus it is wise to be always careful in making a good start in whatever you attempt, be it small or big.</div>
