Once at a press conference, Lord Louis Mountbatten, the last viceroy to India dealt with several questions with great skill. One of the journalists praised him and asked him the secret of all his achievements. To this Lord Mount batten answered, “The truth is that I am a very ordinary person, and if I have any success, it is only due to hard work and sincerity.” And he got a standing ovation from everyone present.

After his first audition, Sidney Poitier was told by the casting director, “Why don’t you stop wasting people’s time and go out and become a dishwasher or something?” Poitier vowed to show him that he could make it, going on to win an Oscar and become one of the well-regarded actors in the business.

On one occasion, Francis of Assisi was going through the fields. A peasant ran to him and asked if he were Brother Francis. When the man of God humbly replied that he was the man he was asking about, the peasant said, “Try to be as good as you are said to be by all men, for many put their trust in you. Therefore I request you, never to be other than you are expected to be.”
