A skilful medium pace bowler, a hard hitting middle order batsman, a brilliant versatile fielder and an intuitive captain who led by example, Kapil Dev is one of the greatest cricketers India has ever produced.

Coming from a small town in Haryana where nobody was keen on cricket and also from a family with no cricketing background, it took Kapil a lot of hard work to motivate himself to play the game at the highest level.

Kapil was a truly dynamic cricketer who shaped many Indian triumphs during his long and arduous career, which stretched from 1978 to 1994. His dedication and passion for the game and his eagerness to face challenges were his strongest characteristics. The most trying times have almost always brought out the best in him.

It was Kapil who led the country to the first World Cup victory in 1983. He was known as a man of few words who spoke only when it was necessary. But on the day of the Final he spoke a few words that really changed the face of the Indian Cricket.

India had made only 183 runs in the Prudential World Cup Finals against the West Indies. At that time West Indies was the best team in the world and India had little hope of defending this score of 183 runs. But the Indian captain had different ideas for the team and the country. “We have made 183. They also will have to make 183. Let us make them ‘earn’ every run,” he spoke with passion and determination. Those few words made all the difference.

One day a construction supervisor from 6th floor of the building was calling a worker working on the ground floor. Because of the construction noise, the worker on the ground floor did not hear his supervisor calling.

Then, to draw the attention of the worker, the supervisor threw a 10 rupee note from up which fell right around in front of the worker. The worker picked up the 10 rupee note, put it in his pocket and continued with his work.

Again to draw the attention of worker, the supervisor now threw a 500 rupee note and the worker did the same — picked the 500 rupee note, put it in his pocket and started doing his job.

Now to draw the worker’s attention, the supervisor picked a small stone and threw it on his head. The stone hit the worker’s head. This time the worker looked up and the supervisor communicated with the worker.

This story is same as of our life. God from up wants to communicate with us, but we are busy doing our worldly jobs. Then God gives us small gifts and we just keep it without seeing from where we got it.

Then God gives us amounts (gifts) and we are the same. Just keep the gifts without seeing from where they came and without thanking God. We just say we are lucky. Then when we are hit with a small stone, which we call problems, then we look up and we communicate with God.

So every time we get gifts, we should thank God immediately, and not wait till we are hit by a small stone, and then communicate with God.

The professor stood before his class of 30 senior molecular biology students, about to pass out the final exam. “I have been privileged to be your instructor this semester, and I know how hard you have all worked to prepare for this test. Carousels go around and around, always ending up where they started. We used to love them, but after a while we got sick of the monotony and wanted to get off. As with many things, the ride is fun for a while, until we realize that no progress is being made.

So, if this year looks a lot like last year (and the year before)… get off the carousel.

If you keep using the same excuses for not making progress towards your goals… get off the carousel.
If you have been in the same dead-end job, doing nothing meaningful with your unique skills… get off the carousel.

If you keep repeating the same mistakes… get off the carousel.

If you keep finding yourself in the same negative situations… get off the carousel.

If you feel as though life is boring and mundane… get off the carousel.

If it seems as though you are getting left behind in this ever-changing world in which we live… get off the carousel. Don’t complain about the carousel, make a change.

Take the risk and take action. Build momentum. Read, learn, and grow, because you can’t make progress on a carousel.

Every New Year holds the promise of change. If you are unhappy with what you are doing and where you are headed, the year 2015 bids you make a change. “If you focus on results, you will never change. If you focus on change, you will get results,” reminds Jack Dixon.

Making New Year resolutions has become passé. Yet, it remains a simple and effective way of bringing about change in at least some aspects of your life, be it at the personal level or whatever. The goal of our change-oriented New Year resolutions isn’t to just appear to be making progress; rather the goal is to improve. If there is no improvement, it is meaningless to change for the sake of change.

Though your New Year resolutions are always paved with good intentions, sooner or later down the road, you could find yourself off the track. You can overcome this daunting experience if, at first, you set small and attainable goals for the year instead of gigantic ones. Secondly, you focus constantly on what you will do, not on what you will not do. Thirdly, you ought to maintain an ongoing accountability, no matter what!

As IQ completes 40 years of its uninterrupted publication, we at IQ salute each of YOU dear readers for your continued support and faith in us. It is you who have kept our journey on the success track.
