The beginning of Banaras Hindu University has a story still interesting and inspiring. The acclaimed Baneras Hindu University is the brainchild of Madanmohan Malavia. When he began working out the possibility of establishing this university he had to face a number of difficulties, some of them quite unforeseen. But he was determined to establish the university and gave his heart and soul to the matter. He needed a huge sum of money to establish the university. He approached several wealthy persons, nobles, aristocrats and merchants and made a fund raising campaign. Some of them treated his appeal kindly while others slammed the door at his face.</div>

<br />One day he approached the Navab of Hyderabad for funds. “How dare you to ask me money to build a Hindu university?” yelled the infuriated Navab. He picked up one of his foot wears and hurled it at Malavia. The humiliated Malavia patiently took the footwear and left the palace. An idea struck him as he left the palace.</div>

<br />Malavia came to the market place and started auctioning out Navab’s footwear. Since the footwear was of the Navab people showed great interest in the auction. Everyone tried to get it at higher bid. The news reached the Navab. He had a new headache now. He thought if the price quoted for his footwear were low it would be an injury to his pride and damage to his popularity. Hence, he ordered his servants to rush to the market place and make the highest bid and procure the footwear at any cost. Malavia raised huge money in the auction and sold the footwear back to the Navab for a huge sum. He used the money to establish the Banaras Hindu University.</div>

<br />Though the story is probably apocryphal, there is no doubt that chocolate was a drink worthy of the gods. Its taste and flavour were out of this world. No wonder Carl Linnaeus named this tree as Theobromas Coca (meaning God’s food). Today it is famous worldwide by its nickname coco.</div>

<br />Now back to Mexico…. Cortes took some seeds of the coco plant and planted them in Spain. For about a hundred years, Spain guarded the secret of the coco plant. But with more and more explorers travelling around the world, the word got out and by the 17th century, entire Europe started drinking chocolate. Today Ghana, Brazil and Nigeria are the largest producers of coco.</div>

<br />John Roebling had harboured a novel idea of a bridge of this sort, but the engineers and experts considered this idea utopian and asked him to throw it out of his mind. They said that it is simply impossible. Roebling was not disheartened by those disappointing and discouraging words.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />Roebling’s conviction grew stronger that the bridge could be built and hence began to convince his son, Washington, an up-coming engineer. They recruited their crew and began to build the bridge. The enthusiastic beginning came to a halt with an accident when John Roebling was killed and Washington suffered severe brain damage which resulted in his not being able to walk or talk or even move.</div>

<br />Everyone had a negative comment to make and felt that the project should be scrapped since the Roeblings were the only ones who knew how the bridge could be built. However, Washington Roebling had an indefatigable determination to complete the bridge. He began developing a mode of communication as he lay in the hospital. With the only finger that he could move, he touched the arm of his wife and tapped the code. She then communicated to the engineers who carried out the instruction.</div>

<br />The instruction tapped out with one finger by the bed-ridden Washington Roebling brought the dream bridge to a reality after thirteen years.</div>

Is ‘complaining’ one of the favorite pastimes you may find yourself indulging in? Your justification behind most of your complaints could be about not having something. And yet, in reality, you could perhaps be losing sight of the wonderful things that you actually have. When things are taken for granted due to over-familiarity with them, you are prone to get into the habit of complaining.<br /><br />Think of the numerous blessings you take for granted every day. For example, you wake up in the morning without a second thought for the fact that you are alive; the warm comfy bed you could snuggle in through the night and the security of the roof over you; as you step on the floor, you don’t realize the magic involved in coordination and walking; you turn on the tap with the surety of getting water; you eat your breakfast without even considering the hands behind its preparation. Your day goes on with many more blessings as if they were all your birthrights!<br /><br />Once a father asked his son, “If someone you knew were to give you a million dollars, and tell you to spend it the way you want, what would be the first thing you would buy?” His son’s response was: “I’d buy a Thank You card!” Developing an attitude of gratitude for every little thing you have and enjoying it is the best way to counter the habit of complaining. Gratitude clears the haze that obscures the gifts surrounding you. “Gratitude is the single most important ingredient to living a successful and fulfilled life,” reminds Jack Caulfield.<br /><br />To start with, be conscious of every blessing – simple things which have always been in your life but which you tend to take for granted, and gradually start acknowledging and appreciating them. Don’t wait to realize their worth until they are taken away from you. Think of this as a wake-up call! Make gratitude an attitude of your heart and you’ll never regret it!</div>
