The term “duty”, like every other universal abstract term, is impossible clearly to define. The ordinary idea of duty everywhere is that every good man follows the dictates of his conscience. However, only one idea of duty which has been universally accepted by all mankind, of all ages and sects and countries, and that has been summed up in a Sanskrit aphorism thus: “Do not injure any being; not injuring any being is virtue, injuring any being is sin.”</div>

The one point we ought to remember is that we should always try to see the duty of others through their own eyes, and never judge the customs of other peoples by our own standard. I am not the standard of the universe. I have to accommodate myself to the world, and not the world to me. When all seems to be doom and gloom, there are still positive possibilities; you just have to look for them. Too often, we only focus on the negatives. Learn to look at every difficult situation as a present; the gift within is the possibilities it holds. To open the gift you must find the “possibility.” When you are in a difficult or a stressful situation, reflect on the following four questions:</div>

<b>2) Are there lessons I can learn to avoid a similar situation in the future?</b></div>

No sense dwelling on the issue. Recognize and think of ways for the future to avoid a similar situation and then move on! Remember you can’t change the past, but you can change the future!</div>

<b>3) What good can be realized?</b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This is the gift. Rather than focusing our energy and thoughts on the negative of the situation, look for the positive. Sometimes you have to look hard, sometimes you don’t even realize until later. But in every situation, there is positive, you just have to find it! By focusing on the positive you are helping to reduce your stress levels!</div>

A married couple came to a counsellor for advice. No sooner were they seated, than they began speaking at the same time in a duel of criticisms. When they finally stopped for lack of breath, the counsellor suggested that now they tell each other all the good they see in one another. There was total silence.</div>

The counsellor watched... Soon a tear slid down the cheek of his wife. She crumpled the paper in her fist and held it tight. Praise had healed a thousand wounds. </div>

At an early age, while studying at the Warsaw Conservatory, several of his teachers attempted to dissuade him from taking up a career as a pianist, since they found that his hands were not formed right. They urged him, instead, to try composition.</div>

Paderewski, however, was convinced that his vocation was to be a pianist. He had enough self-confidence and determination which made him practise, practise and practise the piano for long hours.</div>

Even the remark of the great musician Theodor Leschetizky, under whom he later studied, that “You might have been a great pianist if you had started earlier; it is too late now!” did not deter him. At the age of 18, Paderewski was forced to relearn piano technique as if he were a child. By his mid 20s he was finally brought to the stage.</div>

Paderewski’s performance drew the largest crowds in history at a time when the solo recital was still in its infancy. “If I miss one day of practice, I notice it. If I miss two days, the critics notice it. If I miss three days, the audience notices it,” said the master pianist.</div>

A man was exploring caves by the seashore. In one of the caves he found a canvas bag with a bunch of hardened clay balls. They didn’t look like much, but they intrigued the man, so he took the bag out of the cave with him. As he strolled along the beach, he would throw the clay balls one at a time out into the ocean as far as he could.</div>

He thought little about it, until he dropped one of the clay balls and it cracked open on a rock. Inside was a beautiful, precious stone! </div>

Excited, the man started breaking open the remaining clay balls. Each contained a similar treasure. He found thousands of dollars worth of jewels in the 20 or so clay balls he had left. Then it struck him.</div>

He had been on the beach a long time. He had thrown maybe 50 or 60 of the clay balls with their hidden treasure into the ocean waves. Instead of thousands of dollars in treasure, he could have taken home tens of thousands, but he had just thrown it away!</div>

It’s like that with people. We look at someone, maybe even ourselves, and we see the external clay vessel. It doesn’t look like much from the outside. It isn’t always beautiful or sparkling, so we discount it. </div>

There is a treasure in each and every one of us. If we take our time to get to know that person, and if we ask God to show us that person the way He sees them, then the clay begins to peel away and the brilliant gem begins to shine forth.</div>

I have in my hands two boxes which God gave me to hold. He said, “Put all your sorrows in the black, and all your joys in the gold.” I heeded His words, and in the two boxes I stored my joys and sorrows. The gold became heavier each day; the black was as light as before.</div>

With curiosity, I opened the black to find out why it is lighter. Then I saw in the base of the box, a hole which my sorrows had fallen out by. I showed the hole to God, and mused aloud, “I wonder where my sorrows could be.” He smiled gently at me and said, “My child, they’re all here with me.”</div>

We who lived, in concentration camps can remember the men who walked through the huts comforting others, giving away their last piece of bread. They may have been few in number, but they offer sufficient proof that everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms — to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way.</div>

And there were always choices to make. Every day, every hour, offered the opportunity to make a decision, a decision which determined whether you would or would not submit to those powers which threatened to rob you of your very self, your inner freedom; which determined whether or not you would become the plaything of circumstance, renouncing freedom and dignity to become moulded into the form of the typical inmate.</div>

Seen from this point of view, the mental reactions of the inmates of a concentration camp must seem more to us than the mere expression of certain physical and sociological conditions. Even though conditions such as lack of sleep, insufficient food and various mental stresses may suggest that the inmates were bound to react in certain ways, in the final analysis it becomes clear that the sort of person the prisoner became was the result of an inner decision, and not the result of camp influences alone. Fundamentally, therefore, any man can, even under such circumstances, decide what shall become of him — mentally and spiritually. He may retain his human dignity even in a concentration camp.</div>
